Relaunch of the Lowertown Community House: a dynamic and promising start

By Martial Maseba Maweja of the Lowertown Community Resource Centre

Having had the privilege of working closely with the Lowertown Community Resource Centre (LCRC) team over the past months, I’ve come to realize that the “vibe” of the House isn’t something you can plan– it’s something you experience. It’s the sound of laughter drifting from the collective kitchen, the familiar smell of fresh coffee waiting for the residents, and above all, that deep sense that every person who walks through the door is seen and heard.

My personal experience within this ecosystem has shown me that the Community House offers much more than services – it is a safe space from isolation. Whether during an informal chat on a Tuesday afternoon or a clothing distribution, a sense of solidarity is palpable. Seeing a resident leave with a warm coat or a smile after a mentoring session reminds us why this space is vital. It is this authenticity and mutual kindness that make Lowertown a neighborhood where, despite the challenges, you never walk alone.

Since January 2026, the Lowertown Community House (one of the LCRC’s locations), perfectly situated at 145 Beausoleil Drive, has established itself as an essential hub of local life. Following the food bank’s move in March 2025, major renovations were undertaken to optimize the space and make services more accessible to residents of the neighbourhood.

Residents can now enjoy a diverse program of activities. Among the flagship initiatives, the collective kitchens have been a huge success. They allow neighborhood families to have access to a kitchen and to come together to socialize and prepare meals, all in a friendly atmosphere. Booking appointments for emergency laundry services is becoming increasingly popular and is now available online.

February was punctuated by the Open House on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Music, conversation, and snacks were on the agenda, reinforcing a sense of belonging and community. Furthermore, events such as Winterfest in Jules Morin Park drew a large turnout, demonstrating residents’ desire to forge strong bonds.

And this is just the beginning. This spring, the Community House is planning an even more diverse offering. A new, larger-scale outdoor Open House – featuring a free outdoor garage sale – is on the horizon. Seedlings are sprouting and community garden projects for the community and the children in the after-school program are also in the works. Basic computer workshops and the women’s circle activities are on the new calendar. Adham, Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) Community Developer, can also be found on Monday afternoons for coffee chats. Finally, special emphasis will be placed on supporting newcomers through social support and mentoring services. The goal of being a safe and welcoming space remains central to the Community House’s services – smiles and a good cup of tea or coffee are always available!
