It’s back: Bordeleau Park’s beloved dock on the Rideau

After a brief disappearance earlier this summer, the much-loved dock at Bordeleau Park has made a welcome return to the Rideau River, thanks to the persistent efforts of city park staff and the local community.

Installed originally around 2012, the floating wooden dock – supported on simple barrels – quickly became a staple of the park. Long-time residents recall that it was one of the first public docks on the Rideau, constructed through a combination of community negotiations, neighbourhood fundraising, and cash-in-lieu contributions from a nearby development.

Regardless of how it came to be, the dock’s appeal was undeniable. “It was one of those places that just quietly brought people together,” said a member of the Friends of Bordeleau Park. “You’d see kids fishing for minnows, people launching canoes or paddleboards, couples holding intimate weddings, others just sitting with their feet in the water.” It also became a launch point for collecting water quality samples and an informal stage for countless sunset viewings.

Over time, the structure evolved. Under the care of city parks staff – names like Louis and George are fondly remembered – it was updated to meet new standards for accessibility, stability, and public safety. The ramp slope was adjusted, side railings added, and rotting wood replaced.

But this June, after a routine inspection, the dock was deemed unsafe for public use and removed. Its absence was felt immediately. “People noticed right away,” said a nearby resident. “It wasn’t just a dock – it was part of our daily rhythm, part of what made this little corner of Lowertown so special.”

Now, after renewed collaboration between the City of Ottawa’s parks department, the Friends of Bordeleau Park, and engaged citizens, a new dock is in place. Designed to meet modern safety and accessibility standards, it still retains the spirit of the original – a place where the community and river meet. As summer rolls on, the dock is already regaining its status as a gathering spot. Kayaks and paddleboards are back in the water and once again, Bordeleau Park’s dock is a hub for outdoor enjoyment.
