Is your mailbox starting to be filled with donation requests?
While most charitable donations are made in December, the Giving Tuesday organization describes itself as the world’s largest generosity movement raising millions. This year, Tuesday November, 28th, 2023 is Giving Tuesday.
For comprehensive charity reporting, Charity Intelligence Canada provides profiles on approximately 800 charities—including some local Ottawa charities. Want to know the best, the worst, the most effective, the highest-paid staff or the percentage of your donation that actually goes to the charitable work you support? It’s all there.
There are some nice surprises! Food banks across the country including our Ottawa Food Bank, get 5-star ratings. The Ottawa Mission is up there with four stars. The wealth of some organizations is surprising too. The Salvation Army holds $1.4 billion in investments and has four staff making over $350K a year.
It’s an interesting rabbit hole to go down and it illuminates the sometimes puzzling business of donating to charities.
